TEMPE, Ariz. While Sunday nights tie may feel like a loss to some in the Arizona Cardinals locker room, it has helped their chances of making the playoffs.
According to the ESPN Football Power Index, the Cardinals have a 41.6-percent chance of making the playoffs heading into their Week 8 trip to Carolina the seventh-highest chances in the NFC. They also now have a 26-percent chance to win the NFC West.Bruce Arians knows the tie with the Seahawks, while painful now, could help later on.Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports
If the Cardinals had lost to the Seahawks, their chances of making the playoffs wouldve dropped to 34 percent and their chance of winning the division wouldve dropped to 12 percent. On the other hand, had Arizona won Sunday night, their chances of making the playoffs wouldve increased to 65 percent and winning the division to 47 percent.
With the playoff picture starting to come into focus as teams enter the midpoint of the season, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians didnt know if 10 wins would be enough for Arizona to get into the playoffs.
The way parity is right now, I would think it would have a good shot of at least getting the tiebreaker, he said. It normally does.
At 3-3-1, the Cardinals are sitting in second place in the NFC West, ahead of the 3-4 Los Angeles Rams and behind the 4-1-1 Seahawks.
The Cardinals are the 10th seed in the NFC, a half-game behind three teams with 4-3 records. If they cant go on a run and win the West, a wild-card berth isnt out of the question.
Sometimes [a tie] can help you, Arians said. You never know. Its a division loss. Ive seen it help teams, and well have to wait and see.
Arizona will face a team Sunday afternoon that was once helped by a tie.
A 37-37 tie in Week 6 in 2014 gave the Carolina Panthers a 7-8-1 record, which helped them clinch the NFC South title and a wild-card berth by a half-game over the 7-9 New Orleans Saints. The Panthers the beat the Cardinals in the wild-card round that season.
The tie was huge for us, Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. You lose that game and coming down to the end like it did for us, it was one of those things that if we had lost, we wouldve been out of it.
The tie by half a game is what got us into the playoffs.
