Smith Putting Up Mediocre Season for 49ers
Smith has put together another lackluster season after coming into the campaign as the 49ers’ projected top target. While some of his struggles are due to the team’s quarterback play, his inability to get separation in the secondary has him on pace to post a new career low in yards per catch.
This season, Smith has caught 20 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns.
Additionally, his iron-man streak also came to an end this year. The 27-year-old Maryland product played all 16 games in each of his first five NFL seasons. The impressive run of durability came to an end in Week 11 when he was kept out with a shoulder injury.
If the latest ailment forces him from the lineup again, Jeremy Kerley should serve as the Niners’ clear top option in the passing game for the time being. It could also lead to upticks in playing time for Rod Streater and Quinton Patton.
Smith hasn’t been nearly as involved in the offense as the 49ers hoped when they signed him to a lucrative five-year contract last year. Losing him to injury is still a setback, given the limited number of playmakers on the offensive side, though.
